Tumaini Miles of Smiles Sponsorship Program

FOUNDER

As the last born in poverty stricken family of six children, Rose Bugusu grew up experiencing the worst form of poverty and suffering. In her formative age, she survived by working alongside her mother in farms.  Bugusu’s heart learned and experienced a lot at the time she needed to join high school. She was not certain if there was a possibility for her to join high school since her sisters never joined high school and she knew this would still happen to her. Rose’s heart changed when one of her sisters who was just working as a house help in Nairobi said she would try to find a cheaper school for her to join high school. Everybody including Rose was shocked as house helps earned very little and the same sister was to help the parents as well. But She went ahead and invited Rose to Nairobi and was admitted in a day school which allowed her sister to pay school fees per month. What Rose was concentrating on was going to school and not even boarding a bus or having lunch.    When Rose went back home to visit her parents it was an experience as things were different in her world. She was going to school at the same time living in town and she saw life in rural areas very different. Despite the difficulties she was going through as walking to school every day without lunch and even not having school shoes, bag and even uniform, her heart broke! This was because of her friends who had no one to sacrifice and enable them to join secondary school. Most of her friends had already had kids whom they could not even take care of, others had already gotten married and even separated again and having problems to take care of their kids, it was so depressing. This changed Rose’s heart and gave her a burden in her heart. Having accepted Christ in her life and not knowing what to become after school, Rose shared with her mom and told her one day she would come and help people back home.

This was never realized until after 20 years, waiting upon the Lord in prayers and going through so many experiences in life, God prepared Rose and in 2004 she felt that God’s timing ad come and thus started working out the journey of Tumaini Miles of Smiles Centre!  Year 2005 Tumaini was born and praise be to God!

TMSC greatly appreciates the work done by different volunteers who come to offer their free services. We are very graeful for all who have dedicated their time and come to serve at Tumaini. We would like to recognize the services of several medical practitioners consisting of pediatricians, dentists, pharmacists and nurses through the ISF in USA.
They voluntarily attend to sick children and people from both TMSC and other surrounding communities. The medical services provided have been a great blessing to TMSC and its neighbors.
We look forward to having more volunteer teams come to TMSC throughout the years. This really helps TMSC in different ways and we are very grateful for their sacrifice.

TMSC has been able to use sports as a critical component in the lives of the children and for talent development. Many children have rediscovered their potentials through a range of sporting activities provided including ballgames, athletics, drama & theatre arts, , dances, Music/singing. With a strong team of talented children TMSC has successfully facilitated a community outreach project in the Districts up to the provincial levels with an Essay Competition on topical issues on Girls traditional life, HIV/AIDS, Orphans’ lives  Climate Change, Drug Abuse and Poverty.

Spiritual Enrichment

Being a Christian organization TMSC has set up a nondenominational service to enable children know about God and also through the biblical studies the children grow up in godly morals. This has seen the children getting involved in choir singing, group discussions and just inquisitive on knowing more about the word of God and who God is in our lives.

SUSTAINABILITY PROJECTS

TMSC is a home of a unique nature because of its reinvestment principle in all of its on-going and anticipated projects. TMSC is currently implementing several sustainability projects to boost its income generation initiative to supplement donor support and sustain care and access to services by the increasing number of OVCs that need TMSC’s Care and Protection. The ongoing projects are livestock and agriculture. Apparently we are renting farms for the same and we are hoping and looking forward to acquiring our own farm for better production and yields.

Vocational Training department produces quality school uniforms for our school and we are working on rendering the services to other schools to provide an income to supplement the running costs
