Thank you for your interest in the VRCE (Volas-Redd Center for Education). This construction project is taking place in Malava, Kenya.  It was the hope of patients, friends and family members of Dr. Gena Volas-Redd that we would be able to complete a school building on the campus of Tumaini Miles of Smiles Center. To surprise her for her 40th birthday, the staff of the International Sports Federation began to collect donations and has sent them to Tumaini Miles of Smiles Centre in Malava to help begin construction of a school building for 150 needy children. The ISF staff felt that this was the perfect way to honor such an amazing doctor who has meant so much to many, particularly the president of ISF whose cancer was treated by Dr. Volas-Redd.
We have constructed 6 permanent classrooms and we are remaining with

As a result of ISF's involvement with the Tumaini Center, they recently took a medical team to Kenya to work with the people in the Malava community. The team treated nearly 1,400 patients during the one week project. They are planning to return to Malava on October 2010.

Please contact
Cheryl Wolfinger if you are interested in participating on a medical mission project to serve at the Tumaini Miles of Smiles Centre.

The Volas-Redd Center is still underway! If you wish to help donate funds to finish out the building project, please contact Rose Bugusu for more information or visit our "Make a Donation" page for instructions on how to make a one-time donation.

History of the Volas-Redds Center

Picture
Cheryl Wolfinger, president of the International Sports Federation and lymphoma cancer survivor, was having lunch with Eileen and Denise, staff of Dr. Gina Volas-Redd. They began to talk about Dr. Volas-Redd during their conversation and knew that they had to do something to honor this amazing physician on her upcoming 40th birthday. At first they thought they would surprise her at a local restaurant with friends and family. However, the more they talked the more they realized that they wanted it to be bigger than that. They wanted to adequately take their time and focus to honor Gena. That is when they decided to have her 40th birthday celebration in a banquet hall at a local church. The next step was the guest list and invitations...then, of course, the gift. What to give the good doctor? They talked about having people just bring a donation to a cancer foundation and they could present her with one of those big cardboard checks at the end of the party. But, the more they thought about that the less of a "wow" factor it had.

Then, in October 2007 Cheryl was talking with Eileen about her upcoming trip to Kenya where she would be working at an orphanage to help some extremely needy children. As she explained the project...the light came on! That is it! They would honor Dr. Volas-Redd by raising fund to help build a school building at an orphanage in Kenya!! Perfect! It would have a profound impact on the children AND would serve as a project that Dr. Volas-Redd could have her hand in.

So, there you have it. The birth of the Volas-Redd Center for Education...now already in use by the Tumaini Miles of Smiles Centre.
